Morocco: The number of Internet subscribers has increased by 40% since 2019

The number of internet subscribers in Morocco has grown significantly over the past fiscal year and some attribute this interest to the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, and the adoption of the remote education and work model. during the quarantine period.

In 2021, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) had published the results of an annual research in which it was indicated that the use of work, distance education and online shopping due to the repercussions of Corona had a significant impact on the uses of digital technology among Moroccans.

The study also reported that three-quarters of Moroccans increased their phone use during quarantine in 2020. Internet use also increased over the same period for eight out of 10 individuals.

That said, the number of Internet subscribers increased by 40.1%, compared to the level of 2019. The Department of Financial Studies and Forecasts affiliated with the Ministry of Economy and Finance indicated that the indicators of the telecommunications sector continued to record a positive evolution at the end of the first nine month of 2022.

Also according to this source in its circumstantial note, the number of Internet service subscribers at the end of 2022 reached approximately 35.6 million, an increase of 8.3% on an annual basis. The number of subscribers at the end of 2019 was around 25.4 million, which means that it grew by 10.2 million in three years.

Official indicators indicate that the mobile telephony base reached 53 million subscribers at the end of 2022, compared to 51.3 million in 2021, which represents a slight drop of 3.2%. At the level of fixed lines, it is still stable, growing by around 5.3%, bringing the total to 2.6 million subscribers. It should be noted that theANRT did not publish any data on the telecommunications sector last year, the latest statistics were for the third quarter of the year 2021. Since that date, no new data has been published.

The Directorate of Financial Studies and Forecasts affiliated with the Ministry of Economy and Finance specified, in a note of November 2022, that the total fold of telephone services had registered more than 57 million subscribers, up by 5, 1% at the end of September, 4.6% at the end of June 2022 and more than 8.1% a year ago (March 2022).

With regard to Internet service, it increased by 8% at the end of September 2022, after an increase of 6.8% at the end of June 2022, and of 17.8% at the end of September 2021. The report adds that the decline in the Internet service reached 36.6 million subscribers at the end of the first nine months of 2022, compared to 33.9 million subscribers at the end of September 2021, bringing the number of subscribers to this service by 39.7% (more 10.4 million subscribers) compared to the end of September 2019.
