South Africa : Capitec customers finally get their wish as bank adds new app feature

Banking group Capitec has launched new features for its banking app – the ability for customers to purchase LOTTO, PowerBall and Daily LOTTO tickets.

The bank said that this feature has been one of the most demanded by its banking customers, and is reserved for account holders older than 18.

A recent feature added to the app is the “please pay me” option, which allows customers to send an automatically-generated or customised QR code requesting payment.

To use the “please pay me feature”, customers should:

Here’s how:

  1. Sign into the app
  2. Tap Transact
  3. TapPay me
  4. Choose either My QR (no amount specified) or Custom QR (you add the amount)
  5. To request payment, choose Share now. The phone will display a list of available message apps
  6. Choose the preferred messaging app and choose the person to send the payment link to

More changes to come

In June 2022, Capitec’s chief information officer Wim De Bruyn noted that ‘super apps’, banking-as-a-service, behavioural banking and cyber security are some of the trends that are expected to be a focus of the banking sector in the coming years.

In line with these trends, Capitec is working on new service offerings and features that its banking customers will have access to in the future. These include:

  • Hyper-personalised messages: Using big data and analysis of client behaviour, customers will see fewer notifications for unnecessary or unrelated loans that they do not want or need. Prompts will be personalised for each customer profile.
  • QR Signing: Capitec has entered an agreement with Sky QR, a digital security firm that allows users to securely verify documents and information through a QR code.
  • Banking without a bank: Customers will be able to take out a loan or payment services without needing to directly engage the bank. With the widespread use of smartphones, these types of transactions have become a cheaper, more convenient, and safer alternative to cash.
