Algeria : Giplait Group’s vision should focus on development of domestic production

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Abdelkader Bouazghi, urged the leaders of the Giplait group to make more efforts and commitments for the development of national milk production in order to participate in the realization of the country’s target of reducing imports of milk powder and its derivatives.

The country is facing a difficult financial situation, while the import bill for dairy  and milk products weighs on the trade balance, said the minister who visited the Giplait public group where he chaired a meeting with its leaders .

To face this situation, the group’s vision “must center on domestic production. It also requires the will and involvement of all subsidiaries,” he noted.

The 16 subsidiaries of the group are also called upon to make more efforts and commitments to achieve the social objectives that are assigned to them. In particular, it is necessary to meet the needs of citizens for dairy products, in particular packaged pasteurized milk (LPC), the price of which is administered at 25 DA / liter.

The Minister stressed the need to preserve the regulatory role of Giplait, which currently produces between 50 and 60% of market needs in LPC, the rest being supplied by private processors.

In addition to the LPC, the group also manufactures other milk products that currently account for 20% of its total milk production estimated at 1.5 billion liters per year.

He also encouraged the group to federate the breeders around its dairies to increase the collection of raw milk.

The minister also listened to the Giplait executives who raised concerns related to the distribution and marketing of certain milk products.
